In 2000 The Manitoba Government announced the closure of one of Manitoba's Institutions, Pelican Lake. VOI originated with the belief that every person has the right to live in the community of their choice and be supported to do so, regardless of ability.Since opening in 2001 our services have expanded and adjusted based on the needs of our communities. The team requested we come forth with a 'vision' for individuals leaving the institution, hence the name, 'Visions of Independence.' was born. Under the advisement of the Pelican Lake Transition Team, Adult Family Services, and the Association of Community Living Manitoba; VOI initiated a Winnipeg based community group to form a board of directors. Although many of our Supported Individuals came to use our services when leaving Pelican Lake many Individuals have since come to utilize VOI services through families, high schools, and friends.In 2012 the staff and board of directors of VOI adopted the following:Our Vision: Communities where all abilities are embraced and valued.Our Mission: Visions of Independence: An individualized holistic approach to community living for adults with Intellectual Disabilities.
